Laser Cutting Custom Made Picture Frames

Framing pictures is expensive, especially when getting inexpensive prints that are unusual sizes. I was tired of purchasing inexpensive and ill-fitting mass-produced picture frames for my art. The frames were not durable and never looked particularly good. I had access to laser cutters and decided to see what I could create.

I could indeed!

As my first deep foray into this kind of design, it certainly does have a kind of naivete, but I did manage to solve the design challenges and frame several pieces of art.

While I had grown accustomed to feature-based solid modeling, prior to this project I hadn’t really utilized the parametric capabilities of Fusion 360, and had the perfect problem to fit that.

Art prints are two dimensions: width and height. Would I be able to create a design that could achieve the following:

  1. Resize to custom fit assorted sizes of art prints

  2. Be made of multiple smaller components to fit the stock size I had on the laser cutters I had access to

  3. Keep some components that would not change sizes so I would be able to sit on a stock of parts

  4. All be able to sandwich and lock together easily enough for a single person to assemble
