SOLIDWORKS: SolidPractices — Working with Imported 2D Data

A sample page from the document.

In 2021, my colleagues at CATI (now GoEngineer) and I were charged by SOLIDWORKS to work on two SolidPractices documents. These documents are official documentation from SOLIDWORKS to share freely with SOLIDWORKS users on subscription to provide guidance on particular topics.

This SolidPractices document covers working with imported 2D CAD data (the other covers 3D imports). 2D data imports are substantially simpler than 3D imports, and use of the eDrawings and DraftSight softwares played a much greater role. The primary areas I was able to provide insight on were:

  • Importing polylines vs splines vs interpolated lines

  • Utilizing the SOLIDWORKS interface for bringing in 2D views to patch together a 3D part.
